[edit] Background

Left to Right: George Head, Lavie Head, Claus Valca, Mrs. Valca, Hamilcar Valca

At the age of one, Claus's father, an eccentric nobleman, moved with his wife and Claus to the city of Norkia . They moved next door to the George Head and his daughter Lavie Head. Claus grew up with and became strong friends with his neighbor's daughter. Hamilcar and George eventually formed a pair and became vanship pilot and navi.

One day, Claus' and Lavie's fathers depart on a ten-star mission, to cross the Grand Stream, from which neither of them ever return. This news is brought to them by an unknown man who was a friend of their fathers. Lavie is orphaned, and one year later Claus' mother dies from stress and exhaustion, orphaning him also. Claus at this time makes the resolution with Lavie to one day cross the Grand Stream together. Claus and Lavie have the houses, and the vanship of their fathers, and little else. They learn to fly the vanship together, Claus as pilot, and Lavie as navi. They sold their houses to protect their father's vanship, then used the vanship to make a living as sky couriers, as their fathers were.

However, Claus' life becomes complicated when a downed vanship pilot thrusts a high-priority errand on him, to deliver a girl named Al to the almost-mythical warship Silverna.

[edit] Personality

Determined and courageous, Claus is determined that once he accepts a mission he must see it through to the very end. He is also determined in the sense that he is compelled to fulfill his childhood dream of crossing the Grand Stream one day.

At the age of 15, Claus still has difficulty coping with the death of his parents. However, one might argue that the premature death of his father is the cause of Claus' nearly prodigious skill at vanship piloting.
